In any business, it is important to build your connections whenever possible. This is especially true in a time of growing economical crisis, where work is becoming more and more sparse for common individuals. While the internet can be a great tool for making these connections, it shall never take the place of the immediate value found in face-to-face communication.
Knowing this, it is best that individuals and companies attend small business seminars and conferences. In our case, we recently attended the Y-12 Small Business Conference in Oak Ridge, TN. While not a large conference by any means, it allowed us to communicate with other small local businesses and trade information and connections regarding possible upcoming work. This kind of information has always proven essential to the growth of our own business, which is what makes communication in itself of the utmost importance.
Conferences like this are also a good way to get a feel for the changing economics in local business as well. When face to face, other business owners are more likely to connect and warn you of upcoming pitfalls you may not have seen coming. Across the internet, connection is far less likely.
